The Power Of Self-Analysis

How I make reading more effective.

Things do not change until you change. It begins with self-analysis

Why do I know so little information?

Why do I get so little done?

Why do I not achieve the goals that I have set?

It’s because I don’t read enough. Why so?

A self-analysis uncovers the fact that I tend to be supine when reading which is not a favorable position to adopt. Most times, I would drift into a slumber and wake up a few hours later with time left to do my other chores.

My answer is that I need to sit at a desk or on a reading couch to engage in this activity. I would be better off taking a nap if it is really necessary than bringing a book to the bed. Since researching this common problem, my reading has improved markedly.

Now, I focus on time for reading. One should know one’s downtime when the mind is less alert. Reading more complex matters requires one to be fully alert while easy reading can be done when there is a challenge to mental retention. In this respect, I am a morning lark as well as a night owl.

Eating less helps physiologically as more blood is directed to the digestive system after eating a full meal. Hence, most people are less attentive after heavy meals. Snacking on some healthy snacks during reading may help keep one awake.

I found out that staying hydrated keeps one satiated and increases oxygen flow throughout the body. This makes me realize that I do not drink enough water in the first place.

One strategy that works for me is to regularly break the boredom of sitting down or the monotony of reading by going for a short walk maybe to the kitchen, around the house, or to a nearby shop to pick up an item. The action of walking itself sometimes generates ideas that can supplement my reading. Even a few minutes of stretching and breathing exercises refresh the mind and body.

I try not to break the monotony by using the mobile, a device of alluring colors and contents that can cause one to keep scrolling and lose the track of time. Moreover, it also tires the eyes.

One of the most effective ways that I sometimes use is to read aloud while walking around in the room with my reading material. Reading aloud also helps to etch the facts into my brain effectively.

Putting pen to paper to write unfamiliar words to decipher later or important concepts do engage my mind better and make reading more effective.

Playing some background music can assist in my reading. In my case, classical music helps. Relaxation spa music does the opposite but for some, heavy metal music is useful so it depends on the individual.

I am glad that I broach this subject as I feel that reading enriches my life and have explored ways to improve it. As a working individual, it leaves very little time at the end of the workday to imbibe the wisdom and knowledge found in books. Hence, I believed that the above steps adopted will see me reading happily into the future.

Reflections Of An Unexpected Episode

My cursor blinked repeatedly in the dark of the night

My mind was empty as I searched for an idea to burn bright

Would this be my last poem, I dread

Could my tenacity wear out, I fret

So I recalled the events of the day

It was generally quiet I would say

Someone hollered because things did not go her way

I stayed calm and tried to make her stay

She walked out on me and said never again

I left her to simmer down to become sane

The next day, she regained her composure

Obviously embarrassed for her unexpected hysteria

I am glad that I had remained at ease

Not knowing what had broken her peace

I am glad that I had not joined the fray

Or we would not be connected today

Everything that happened could become a story

Don’t feel despair, don’t feel sorry

Look around and notice the haste

Life must still go on at one’s sweet pace.

Find Your Answers In Solitude

Solitude, Sweet solitude

In this state, I have developed the fortitude

To dream, create, and inspire

From a flame to a burning desire

Watching the swaying willow tree

Did set my imagination free

Solitude was felt in the depths of the blue

Cruising through the water calm and cool

Where one could only listen to one’s air

And watch life go about without a care

Solitude was felt in my morning jog

It’s the time the mind clears its fog

Ideas, thoughts, and solutions surface

To counter the problems of this rat race

Solitude empowers in its quiet moments

It brings about enlightenment

It sets free the shackles of self-doubt, angst, and fears

Solitude, Sweet Solitude, you put an end to my tears.

O, You Restless Soul

To a friend who always calls me ‘a restless soul’

Rest, rest, You Restless soul!
Many times you have been told
Gaze at the world as it goes by
Not heave and pant and needless sigh

Then came forth an inner sound
Can’t do this, can’t do this, as it pound
The world has moved too quick
I can’t keep up to speed

Its been like this, for an endless time
Change will come in many kinds

Take up the task, just like the few
The world has plenty to amaze you

Roll with the punches, go with the flow
Gain more knowledge as you grow old
Indeed, life keeps looking up
And one must never give it up

That this world has lots more to bequeath
Despite the bad news that persists
Hope and faith must never fade
Cos it’s still our lovely world to make.

Watch Your Thoughts

Moments of emptiness

Moments of happiness

Moments of despair

All moments are like two-sided coins

While one side tells a story

On the other side, you tell your story

There is no good or bad thing

But the way you perceive it

And the way you want to view it

Like the half-filled glass that may be construed as half-full or half-empty

Like the famous drawing that may be construed as a young lady or an old woman

Like the image that may be construed as a vase or two faces

You take your pick in life

I choose to see the beauty in every objection

I choose to see the solution in every confrontation

I choose to see hope in every situation

Life is your own destiny

Life is what you make of it

Life is simply wonderful.

An Awkard Experience At A Dance Session

July 29, 2022 by SUMMER LOTUS Leave a Comment

At a line dancing session on a sultry night

While the dancers twirled around in a wondrous sight

One came and went like a whirling wind

With a mind that has been stretched too thin

She was in awe of the dancing queens

But knows the dances need lots of discipline

In a haste, she left her mobile behind

To continue her chores she was destined

Four kind souls turned up at her gate to return her phone

Instead was dismayed and disgusted at her tone

The one with too many minds soon realized she had done wrong

For reasons, she will never inform

Said she was sorry and made amends

Today they have become casual friends
